Learning about Matt

Matt's journey: Overcoming challenges with web tools

Meet Matt, a 9th-grade student whose journey highlights the impact of targeted web tool integration. Initially, Matt struggled with disruptive behavior in reading class, often talking to peers, ignoring instructions, and pushing classmates. Observations revealed his behavior was reinforced by peer attention and was most problematic during reading, escalating throughout the week. This case study delves into how we addressed his academic and behavioral needs using strategic interventions and digital resources.

Unpacking academic and behavioral barriers

Further analysis showed that Matt faced significant academic difficulties, particularly in reading decoding, comprehension, and writing. He also took longer to start tasks, contributing to his off-task behavior. Teachers considered various factors, including frustration with reading, lack of engagement, peer dynamics, and outside influences. Our approach involved understanding these root causes to develop a comprehensive support plan.

Integrated solutions for Matt's success

To support Matt, we implemented interventions such as strategic seating changes and continuous data collection to better understand his academic and behavioral needs. We integrated several web tools and educational websites to enhance his engagement and improve his skills. These resources helped in creating a more personalized learning experience, fostering a supportive environment, and ultimately contributing to Matt's improved academic performance and behavior.
